FootPong is classic Pong with a Portuguese football soul. Two paddles, one ball, and a rally that gets faster every hit — first to score wins, then do it again.

Built in 2 days with Godot 4.6 and ~170 lines of GDScript. No tutorial, no template just learning by shipping.

Features

  • Player vs Defender — control the striker (W/S), block with the defender (arrow keys)
  • Ball acceleration — 7% faster on every paddle hit. Rallies get intense fast
  • Real-time HUD — score tracking with countdown timer between goals
  • Pause menu — ESC to pause with a custom blur shader overlay
  • Portuguese football theme — Fifica team logo and Vitória de Setúbal-inspired palette
  • Complete game loop — main menu → gameplay → pause → score → replay

Development

FootPong is my first original game — built as part of The 20 Games Challenge. The goal was simple: ship something complete. Main menu, gameplay, pause, score tracking, replay loop — the full cycle.

What I learned along the way:

  • Godot scene structure and node instancing
  • Input handling and the signal system
  • UI/HUD with CanvasLayer
  • Shader programming — my first shader (pause menu blur

7 scripts. ~170 lines. Built in 2 days. This project taught the fundamentals that made everything after it possible.
